False and Greedy Gods

Down under, we’re told the age of entitlement is over for all

To reduce the debt, “shoulders to the wheel” is the official call

Aussie pensioners are quickly seen as an easy touch

Thus Canberra plans to steal more of what already isn’t much

Ned Kelly and Robin Hood robbed the rich to give to the poor

Now it’s the other way round with Pollys stealing more and more

In the new world of rip offs, the con is more refined and very clever

Leaving Aussie battlers with even less income for ever and ever

The irony is incompetence by those in charge of the vault

Where wining and dining and wasteful expenditures never did halt

Then finally came a desperate wakeup whining call

“The Treasury is stone motherless bare and cobwebs on the wall”

Duty and sacrifice in yesteryears kept us united, proud and tall

Yet today, Canberra Suits decide such rules are not for all

It’s a slap in face for our seniors who sweated, toiled and did their bit

To be sacrificial lambs in this poorly organized and hypocritical hit

Missing is leadership by conceited false gods as they travel the land

Sometime even with family in business seats so grand

Flying so far away for social events they have contrived

Don’t forget the extra perks after they have arrived

The pension scheme is no longer what it was intended to do

It has been exploited by greedy Canberra Suits and more than a few

Thus the rich get richer and the poor get poorer by the day

Please God, remove this terrible blight and show us another way

(With apologies to the odd fair dinkum rep wearing a Canberra suit)

Clad with courage, honour, duty first and love of nation

Leadership by example was always his station

Stand fast as this warrior draped with his beloved flag passes by

A soldier’s soldier who lives in our hearts and will never die

VALE – TOM MUGGLETON

Tom passed away peacefully this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary Rose and the Family.

George Mansford’s poem Homeward Bound is appropriate

I saw the shooting star burning so bright

Falling, falling, fading and soon from sight

So distant and yet so near

In its wake, a soldier’s journey so very clear

Duty, sharing, caring, courage and sometimes fear

No longer a mortal in life’s short race

A contented spirit bound for home somewhere in distant space

This fiery trail I saw tonight marks a warrior’s farewell

Leaving behind another legacy of proud deeds to tell

Salute Our Metal Chariots from Yesterday

Dedicated to Jack Lynch and all the others who flew the metal chariots night and day

Does the sound of a helicopter bring back memories, you ask?

Yes, like a flash, no matter where I am or whatever my task

So many flickering fragmented scenes I can hear and see

Of courage, mateship, humour as well as death and misery

The sound of rotor blades is an electric link to the past for me

In an arena of hostile green, strange and far from anywhere

A gladiator’s simple delight was hearing faint wockings in the air

As each turn of the beating blades grew louder in familiar tone

The sound was a strong message that you were far from being alone

It signaled a precious link to your distant and beloved home

When such trusty machines landed with resupply and precious mail

It raised spirits (a scented letter from a sweetheart never did fail)

It was so comforting to read that all was well with family far away

The magic of the pen provided powerful strength for many a day

Sharing news and dreams in whispers at night wherever we lay

The metal chariots brought fresh young faces to join our weary band

From civilian street in peaceful OZ to cannon fodder in a foreign land

They were eager to do well and yet with a touch of doubt and fear

Like all reinforcements on day one, wet behind the ears

They had to learn fast and be prepared for pain and tears

Many times this noisy bird hovered to winch out wounded and dead

Supported by the gunships which spat out death at the enemy ahead

They were our umbilical cord with a world of sanity so far way

Always was the excitement when the Woks came to take us home

To shower, eat fresh food, drink and sleep before again we did roam

Now our ranks are thinner and for missing comrades, often a tear

We still march proud on that special day every year

High above is the haunting noise we knew so well from yesterday

An ancient metal warrior passes by, beating blades as if in a fray

And you ask me if the sound brings back memories this very day?

Opinion – Time for the RSL to get off its knees

If ever there was an act of national moral cowardice it has been the RSL’s nil response to plans to cancel some Anzac Day commemorations this year over possible terrorist threats.

Anzac Day symbolises our national battle honour and the right to commemorate it as our Anzacs did must never be compromised.

The RSL would be wise to reflect on its motto that ‘the price of liberty is eternal vigilance’.

It should also take heed of President Roosevelt’s dictum that’ it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees’ when dealing with governments of all persuasions.

Article by Vietnam Veteran Charlie Lynn.

He is  a candidate for NSW RSL president in a ballot to be conducted in May 2017. He retired as a major from the Australian Army after 21 years service. He later served in the NSW Parliament for almost 20 years. A veteran of 84 Kokoda Trail crossings he was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Logohu in the 2015 PNG New Years Honours List.

OPINION – The RSL must embrace Change or Die

Once Australia’s premier veterans’ advocacy organisation, the Returned and Services League is in rapid if not terminal decline. Its leadership is failing the broad membership, which continues to provide support at local sub-branch level.

The RSL national leadership has failed the challenge of the 21st century as sub-branches close, local leadership ages and resists change.

Young veterans shun the organisation.

Selection trials for Invictus Games 2017

Current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will compete for a place in the 2017 Australian Invictus Games team at selection trials this week in Canberra.

Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said about 80 athletes were expected to compete in the trials for a place in Australia’s 40-person team for the third Invictus Games to be held in Toronto, Canada from 23-30 September.

Prince Harry established the Invictus Games as an international, adaptive multi-sports competition for current and former military personnel who have been wounded, injured or become ill in service.

More than 550 athletes from up to 17 nations are expected to compete in Toronto in individual and team sports including swimming, archery, cycling, track and field, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis, powerlifting, golf and indoor rowing.

Mr Tehan said the Invictus Games showcased top-class athletes and the triumph of the human spirit.

“Just as we respect the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our defence forces, we respect the competitors this week as athletes who have trained hard and sacrificed much to reach this level of excellence, and I wish them all the best in the trials,” Mr Tehan said.

“The physical and mental benefits of training for, and competing in, events like the Invictus Games are invaluable to our current and former ADF personnel, their family and friends.

“Australia’s involvement in the Invictus Games is part of a broader Adaptive Sports Program sponsored by the ADF and RSL in which current and former serving wounded, injured and ill members participate in a variety of competitions.

“Promoting positive mental health and providing the necessary care, rehabilitation and support to ADF personnel who are wounded, injured or ill is one of Defence’s highest priorities.”

The ADF is partnering with the Returned and Services League to send the team to Toronto. The 2018 Invictus Games will be held in Sydney.
